Changelog

What’s new.

Every version of Schreibmaschine, newest first. The app shows the same notes when it offers you an update.

0.2.4

Latest

New

  • Callouts. A quote starting with [!note], [!tip], [!warning] or another type shows as a callout block with its type's icon and colour. A callout can be folded shut and opened again, and it stays as you left it in each vault. Its icon opens a menu to change the type, and Turn into › Callout makes one from any block, keeping its title.
  • Highlights. Text written between == shows highlighted, and a colour's emoji right after the == (==🔴text==) gives it that colour. ⌘⇧H highlights the selection, and the colour stays in the file.
  • The card over a selection has a new look. At its top it shows the selected block's type, and a click there turns every selected block into another kind, with list items keeping their level. Below are Bold, Italic, Strikethrough and Clear format, then Link and Code. Each button's tooltip names its shortcut.
  • The card's coloured A opens Background color: a grid of colours with the ones you used last on top. The selection's own colour is ringed, and Default background takes a highlight away.
  • Tables grow and shrink by dragging. Drag the button beside the last row down to add rows, or the one beside the last column to the right to add columns. Drag back up or left to take empty rows and columns away again. The table shows its new size while you drag, and the page below makes room. Escape puts a drag aside, and a single undo takes it back.
  • A web address typed in a table cell works as a link, as on the page. A click on any link in a cell opens it, whether it is an address, a Markdown link or a link to a page, instead of starting to write in the cell.

Improved

  • The card over a selection stays in place while you use it, such as when you make text bold or choose a colour. It keeps up with shortcuts and the Format menu.
  • Marks and colours are greyed out on the card where the selection touches code, and their shortcuts do nothing there.
  • VoiceOver says whether a mark like Bold is on for the selection.
  • Agents in the terminal get the app's instructions for its tools and use those tools for your vault, even where the vault's own instructions point to another program.

Fixed

  • The app no longer quits when a page is changed from outside while you are editing a code block.
  • While you write in a table cell, the pointer no longer turns into a text cursor over a link in the cell beside it.

0.2.3

New

  • The Today row walks through the days. Under the pointer, ‹ and › step a day back or forward, and a click on the date opens a calendar card for any day. The card dots the days that have a note and has Yesterday · Tomorrow at its foot. The row names the open day ("Tomorrow", "Thu, Nov 12") and offers a way back to today. Its right-click menu has Yesterday, Tomorrow, Pick a day… and the daily notes' settings. ⌃⌘← and ⌃⌘→ step a day too.
  • A day without a note opens as an empty page showing its template faintly. Its file is made only once you start writing, and a note made meanwhile on another device is never written over.
  • ⌘K finds days. Type "tomorrow", "fri", "next fri", "in 3 days", "3 days ago", "Nov 12" or "12.11.", and that day's note heads the results under "Daily notes", or "No note yet" if it has none. Return opens it, and ⌘Return opens it in a new tab. The menu bar's search does the same.
  • The sidebar shows Recents between Today and Favorites: the pages you opened last, newest first.
  • Lists in table cells. Typing "- ", "* ", "+ ", "1. " or "1) " at a line's start begins a list. Shift-Return adds the next item, numbered on, and ends the list on an empty item. Tab moves an item in and Shift-Tab out, with bullets going •, ◦, ▪ and numbers turning to letters and Roman numerals further in. Numbers count on by themselves as items are added, removed or moved, and a pasted list keeps its nesting.
  • Table cells take line breaks: Shift-Return starts a new line in a cell, and line breaks pasted into a cell stay new lines. A row grows and shrinks with what is written in it.
  • Settings › General sets where new pages and attachments go: at the top of the vault, beside the page, in a subfolder beside it, or in one folder.
  • The colours chosen for tags and options are kept in the vault, so every device using it shows the same ones.
  • Agents in the terminal can do more in your vault: read today's or any day's daily note, read pages, search pages, find backlinks, tick tasks, and rename, move or delete pages without breaking links. They can also make pages from a template. The writing AI says when its account's policy keeps the app's tools out.

Improved

  • The Today row stays put under the search field while only the list below it scrolls.
  • A note still waiting to download from iCloud shows as coming. It is never made again beside itself or written over, and a note that can't be read is never written over unseen.
  • Renaming a page leaves links inside code and comments as they are. Bookmarks of folders and pictures follow a rename, and canvas cards follow their file.
  • Deleted files go to the vault's trash folder when the vault is set to use one.
  • Properties keep what they hold: values such as 01067, 1.10 or yes stay text, a name with a comma stays one alias, and footnotes and escaped signs keep how they were written.
  • A choice in the settings opens a menu wide enough for its longest option.
  • A pasted list's items stay siblings when they were indented alike.
  • The formula language in a code block's list is called "Formula".
  • All notes in the sidebar has a cleaner four-square icon.

Fixed

  • Tooltips no longer stay up while the pointer is elsewhere in the sidebar or page. They go as soon as the pointer leaves their button, tab or row.
  • The read-only hint while dragging a board's card now stands over the card.
  • A selection in a list is deleted whole by Option- and Command-Backspace too.
  • Adding or removing a favourite says so when it could not be saved.
  • A property can no longer be added or renamed to a name the page already has in other capitals.
  • An unwritten daily note always counts as opened once its file is made, wherever it was made.

0.2.2

New

  • Many terminals fit in one panel. Each chip shows its whole name, and those that don't fit wait behind "+N" at the end of the row, which lists every session with the one in front ticked. The one in front always stays in the row, and the scroll wheel still moves between them.
  • Terminals running the same command are numbered ("claude 2"). A terminal started for the writing AI is named after its job, such as "Improve writing", while its agent runs.
  • A session in the "+N" list can be ended from its row: the cross under the pointer closes that terminal and leaves the list open. It asks first while an agent is at work, and VoiceOver can close it from the row's actions.

Improved

  • Menus longer than the screen scroll inside their card. The arrow keys bring the row they light into sight, and a scrolling menu opens on its ticked row.
  • A menu that grows while open stays on the screen, opening upwards where it would run past the bottom.

Fixed

  • Typing, Backspace, undo and redo next to a picture no longer make the page jump. The page stays where it is and only scrolls as far as the caret needs.
  • Letters made with a dead key (ü by ⌥U) no longer make the page jump beside a picture, and they take bold or italic after ⌘B or ⌘I as a typed letter does, at a line's start too.
  • A cross held down in the terminal list while its rows change no longer ends the terminal that moved into its place.

0.2.1

New

  • Quotes can hold lists: bullets, numbered items and tasks, nested too, all inside the quote's bar. Typing "- " in a quote starts a list there, and Return, Tab, Delete and "Turn into" keep the items in the quote.
  • Writing agents in the app's terminals can create and change pages and databases in your vault, show a database and open a page. What they write is plain Markdown, like everything else in your vault.
  • The update notice links to what's new: "What's new in 0.2.1" opens that version's notes on the site and leaves the notice up.

Improved

  • Lists by typing work in more places. "- ", "1. ", "# " and "[ ] " also turn a line inside a block (after Shift-Return) into its own block. Spaces or a tab before the marker nest the item, and "• " starts a bullet too.
  • A new item takes the marker of the list it joins, so the list stays one list.
  • Bullets pasted from other apps arrive as a list.
  • ⌘Z right after a list shortcut gives back what you typed, with the caret behind it. Links typed as [[…]] or [label](url) undo in one step of their own.
  • A numbered item that Tab moves under the one above starts its own list at 1 ("a." a level down).
  • A chosen block is highlighted evenly: the last item of a list, a heading or a paragraph is as tall as the items between.
  • A vault's colour is saved in the vault, so it stays the same on every Mac that opens it.
  • The sign-in card shows the keycap, as the app icon and the menu bar do.

Fixed

  • ⌘Z in a page's title brings back the old name, and the title's height, the tab, the bar and the sidebar follow it. Escape, or clearing the title, puts the old name back at its own height.
  • Property names the app once saved in lower case get the spelling your pages use again, and so do database sorts.
  • A selection no longer highlights a sliver of the line below it after a word is made bold.
  • A code block left open in a list item ends with the item, so the bullet after it still becomes a bullet.
  • Pasted code blocks end where they should, and Windows line endings before bullets are read correctly.

0.2.0

New

  • Embed one note in another: ![[Note]], ![[Note#Heading]] or ![[Note#^block]] shows that note, or just that part of it, right in the page. You can edit it where it stands, and your changes are saved back into the embedded note. Choose "Embed page" in the block menu, type ![[ and pick a page, or paste or type ![[Page]] on a line of its own.
  • Videos, sounds and PDFs from your vault now show in the page. Videos and sounds play with the Mac's own controls. PDFs show their pages: #page= opens a PDF at that page, and dragging its bottom corners sets its height.
  • YouTube videos play in the page, starting at the time the link gives. Pasting a video's address asks whether to add it as a mention with the video's title, embed it, or keep it as a link. A video that can't be played in the page shows its picture with a play button that opens it in the browser.
  • The keycap in the menu bar opens search on its own, over any app, and what you choose opens in your last window.
    • A keyboard shortcut does the same from any app.
    • The keycap's right-click menu sets which vault the search looks in.
    • ⇧↵ adds what you typed to today's note.
  • The app keeps running after you close its last window, as long as the keycap or its shortcut is there. Your tabs come back when you search from the menu bar, click the Dock icon, make a new page or open today's note.

Improved

  • Opening a vault no longer waits for the disk: the window comes up at once, and the vault fills in as it is read.
  • The writing AI answers sooner. Its agent starts as soon as the card over a selection offers it, and a request right after an answer no longer starts a second agent.
  • Icons match each other in menus, tabs, the sidebar and buttons, with the same size and line weight throughout. Databases and pictures now sit evenly beside pages, and "Collapse all folders" has an icon of its own.
  • Board cards: the name sits in the middle of its line, the count sits evenly after its label, and a card's buttons are centred.
  • The gear's menu opens right over the gear and stays inside the window.
  • VoiceOver reaches the controls of embedded notes, videos, sounds and PDFs.

Fixed

  • A vault in iCloud Drive with "Optimise Mac Storage" no longer hangs the app at the start. Notes that are still in the cloud are downloaded in the background and come in when they are ready.
  • A note that is moved, renamed or put in the Bin while it is still downloading is no longer brought back under its old name or place.
  • A writing agent's terminal hidden behind the page no longer plays the alert sound when the agent finishes.
  • A vault renamed or moved while it is opening is followed to its new place, and its settings are never written over.

0.1.3

Fixed

  • Starting a writing agent in the terminal no longer types its command into a question your shell asks while it is still starting up: the command waits until the shell is ready for it.

0.1.2

New

  • Rearrange a database table's columns by dragging their headers. A blue line on a column's edge shows where to drag its width.
  • When you and another app change the same note at once (another Mac, your phone, git, an AI agent), both changes are kept, line by line. The banner only asks when you both changed the same lines.
  • When the writing AI waits for you in the terminal, the bar says "The terminal needs you" and why, with a Show terminal button, and the Dock icon bounces.
  • Open any page in the side peek from the sidebar: choose "Open in side peek" from a page's menu, or ⌥-click its row.
  • A picture that no note uses says so on its page and offers Move to Trash.
  • When you add a property, the type that matches its name lights up, and Return creates a property of that type.

Improved

  • The writing AI's agents run with only Schreibmaschine's own tools: your other MCP servers stay off for them, so they start faster and open no login pages. Terminals you start yourself keep all your servers.
  • Copilot starts reliably as the writing AI, and the agent no longer asks you things back while it works.
  • Updates show right in the gear menu: a spinner while checking and downloading, then "You're Up to Date", "Couldn't check. Try later." or "Restart to Update". A blue dot on the gear shows when an update is waiting, and the daily check tells you about each new version only once.
  • A database's or picture's name changes in the sidebar, the tab and the bar as you type it, just like a page's. The file is renamed when you stop typing, and links follow it.
  • A new app icon: a typewriter key.
  • A database that is a page of its own has no lines under its tabs and between its column names. A table cell you edit opens as a card over the whole cell.
  • A database's search slides open and shut smoothly, and stays still when Reduce Motion is on.
  • A database's view tabs and the "+" light up under the pointer.
  • "Open" on a table row and the side peek buttons look cleaner and easier to spot.
  • A picture's page shows the file's size under its title.
  • Settings: "AIs in the terminal" is the new name for "Coding agents". Your email is under "Session", and Preferences and Terminal are under "App".

Fixed

  • The writing AI's command is never typed into a question your shell asks first, and answering "No, exit" when the agent starts ends the request at once.
  • A database's search button no longer stays highlighted after you click it.
  • Tooltips from the buttons at the foot of the sidebar no longer cover an open menu or the login card.
  • Checking for updates by hand while the daily check is running no longer spins forever.
  • Typing a database's name while its note is being saved, or removing the database mid-name, no longer loses the name.
  • Property names sit straight in their field, the search text lines up with its card, and the text you edit in a table cell or on a board card no longer sits half a point off.
  • A picture's page no longer shows the table of contents of the note before.
  • The installer window's bottom line stays visible when Finder shows its status bar.

0.1.1

Improved

  • Updates arrive quietly: a new version downloads by itself, and a note at the foot of the page offers "Install and relaunch" when it's ready.
  • Checking for updates by hand answers right on the page, and the menus and the dot on "?" show when an update is waiting.
  • If an update can't be installed, or a newer version doesn't run on your Mac, Schreibmaschine tells you why.
  • The disk image opens as a clear installer window: drag Schreibmaschine onto Applications and you're done.

0.1.0

The first version of Schreibmaschine: a calm, clear place to write your notes. They stay plain Markdown files in a folder of your own, so every other Markdown app reads them just as before.

New

  • Write in pages: type / for headings, to-dos, tables, code, pictures and links to other pages.
  • Databases: tables and boards, filters and sorts, several views as tabs, and a row's page opened beside the table.
  • ⌘K searches all your notes, with filters for type and date and a preview of each result.
  • Tabs, favourites and a sidebar with every page, database and picture in your folder.
  • Rename or move a page and every link to it follows.
  • Schreibmaschine keeps itself up to date: new versions are offered in the app as soon as they are out.
