FAQ
Questions, answered.
Short answers about the app, your files and your account. Missing something? Ask us — a person reads every message.
The basics
A calm, native Mac editor for people who write. Every page is a plain Markdown file in a folder you own, and writing AI is built in.
Yes, free forever. There is no paid plan, no trial that runs out and no feature held back for later.
The account is how new versions reach you: sign in once in the app and updates arrive on their own. It is also how you tell us what to build next. We only ask for a name, an email and a password.
Any Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. The download is about 18 MB.
Not yet. Schreibmaschine is written in Swift for the Mac, and that is where all the work goes right now.
Your notes
On your Mac, in a folder you pick. Each page is a .md file and its properties are the frontmatter at the top. Your notes never pass through our servers.
Yes. If your notes are already plain Markdown files in a folder, point Schreibmaschine at that folder. Nothing to import, nothing to convert. [[Wikilinks]], tags and backlinks keep working.
Yes. Schreibmaschine only reads and writes plain files, so any other app that opens the same folder sees the same notes.
With anything that syncs a folder: iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Syncthing or Git. Schreibmaschine has no sync service of its own, so your files never sit on our servers.
Export them as Markdown, which most note apps offer. Unzip the export if needed and open the folder in Schreibmaschine.
Writing AI
Yes, when you ask for it. Select a passage and pick Improve writing, Proofread or Translate (into German, English, French or Spanish) on the selection card. The edits show up in blue in your text, and nothing changes until you accept them with ↩.
Not with Apple Intelligence, the default: it runs on your Mac and nothing you select leaves it. If you pick a coding agent instead, the passage goes to that agent’s provider — Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub, or whichever model you set up in OpenCode — and only when you ask.
No. Apple Intelligence comes with macOS. A coding agent runs with the login you already use in its terminal, on whatever plan you have there — Schreibmaschine never asks for a key.
Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot CLI. Schreibmaschine finds the ones installed on your Mac; pick one right on the selection card or under Settings → Terminal → Answered by.
Macs with Apple silicon on macOS 26 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings. On other Macs the writing AI works through a coding agent; the rest of Schreibmaschine runs on any Mac with macOS 14.
Account & updates
Sign in once in the app with the same login you use here. When a new version is out, Schreibmaschine tells you and installs it for you.
Your name, your email address and what you need to sign in, such as a hashed password or your passkeys. Nothing about your notes.
Read the privacy policy →Yes, any time under Settings → Profile. Your notes stay on your Mac — they were never ours to begin with.
